Puffin Cam is currently being updated so thank you for your patience.

We are hoping to bring you live pictures of puffins and storm petrels (with shiny new Petrel Cam!) within the next couple of weeks!

The good news is that the puffins have returned! There are now rafts of up to 200 birds being counted around Burhou after having spent the winter out at sea.

Puffin Cam broadcasts live pictures from the small island of Burhou during the breeding season from May to July.

Burhou Island is 1.5 km off the coast of the channel island of Alderney. Burhou is a paradise for seabirds as there are no rats or cats and very little human disturbance on the island.

Puffin Cam is a way to observe these beautiful birds, in their natural habitat, as they go about their daily lives. You can watch clips from the 2011 puffin breeding season until Puffin Cam (and Petrel Cam!) are up and ready to go!

This project is in collaboration with The Wildlife Trusts and Alderney Wildlife Trust and has been made possible with support from The States of Alderney, South East Grid for Learning (SEGfL) and Sesys.

Storm Petrels!

Storm Petrels!

19 Jul 2011:
Even though the Puffins have gone there are still birds breeding on Burhou! Storm Petrels are tiny seabirds which nest in burrows and rock crevices on the island. Very few people are aware that they are there because they only come out at night! Using our basic Infra-Red camera set up we managed to capture some of these amazing little birds on film. These birds' chicks have just...

Goodbye Puffins

Goodbye Puffins

18 Jul 2011:
Although most of our Puffins have left the island, many are still rafting (sitting on the water) around the island. There are still a few stragglers still feeding chicks on the Island (Including the chick we managed to photograph as an egg earlier in the season) - but it won't be long before they are all out to sea. Keep an eye on the Puffin Cam website for a compilation of the best...

Where have all the Puffins gone?

10 Jul 2011:
We have been noticing fewer and fewer Puffins on Burhou over the past couple of weeks. We were getting quite concerned that our Puffins might have abandoned their chicks. However after consulting with scientists from other colonies we realised that the Puffin breeding season has been unusually early this year! We first noticed birds carrying fish on the 18th May (meaning they had small...

Blown away!

Blown away!

16 Jun 2011:
Last weekend was a blowy one! We were over on Burhou to do some monitoring work, after a lovely sunny day on Saturday the weather closed in overnight and Sunday was so wet and windy we were stuck in the hut! Puffin chicks still need to be fed in bad weather, however, this is no easy task especially for a bird which is not the most accomplished flier even in good conditions. This poor...
