February 17th 2011
Two blue-tits are visiting the tree where our birdbox is. They are returning lots of times during the day. Every now and again one pops inside to look around. It isn't always the same bird that looks in. View the recording from 'Our Birdbox Page'.
Tuesday January 25th
The overnight resident is still evident. A blue-tit has spent a lot of time inside the nest-box during the day and has been defending the territory when other birds try to get in.
Monday January 24th
Two blue-tits have been inspecting the birdbox during daylight hours.
Tuesday 16th November 2010
We have a bird overnighting in our birdbox.
Monday 24th May 2010 15:42h
The remaining 4 chicks have left the nest.
Sunday 23rd May 17:23h.
Sat outside watching the birdbox entrance we saw a little head poke out and the bird then flew away. We think it was the first of the chicks fledging. They have been flapping their wings for the fast few days and today started looking out of the entrance hole. There are only 4 visible inside now. It must be very warm inside the box as it is 28°C outside.
Sunday 16th May 2010
08:40 It's quite clear today that there are, in fact, five chicks.
Friday 14th May 2010
08:30 Both parents are hard at work delivering food to the four hungry chicks. They call out and have their beaks wide open as either bird nears the nest. Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep. Early morning and late evening seem to be the busiest times with a parent coming into the nest every minute or so. The mother is now spending much less time sitting on her chicks. View our 'Our Birdbox Page' for recordings...
Thursday 6th May 2010
00:26h Our Great Tit rests after a long day. Nice to see her put her head under her wing to sleep. But not for long. Even during the night she controls the chicks and then, content, settles back to sleep. (Observed from a hotel room in Glasgow prior to the NEN conference.)
Monday 3rd May 2010
Our first chicks have hatched. We have seen both parents bringing in grubs to feed them. It was cold 5°C during the night but has risen to 10°C at 12.00h.
Saturday 1st May 2010
Whilst the mother Great Tit is out of the nest seeking food and some exercise, you can clearly see the typical orange-brown flecks on her 6 eggs. They are about to hatch we think. Cloudy with a slight breeze 16°C at 14:30h BST. We have just watched her peep out of the nest box. The father bird was waiting for her on the roof. They both flew off together.
Sunday 25th April 2010
We have added a photo' sequence of the mother bird returning to the nest-box. Click here to view...
Monday 19th April

2009 Archive
During the evening of Sunday 3rd May 2009, it became obvious that the mother bird was absent. As the evening wore on and temperatures dropped below 6 C., the baby birds stopped moving. We have to assume the nest has been abandoned. This is especially sad as the mother bird has been a nightly guest in the box since before Christmas.
Sunday 3rd May 2009
Today we saw the father bird bringing food for the mother bird. There are now six beaks asking to be fed and one egg remaining. However the last egg was laid two days later than the others. Mother bird offers the grubs round for the young to take bits one at a time.
Saturday 2nd May 2009
Mother bird is spending time bringing food into the nest for 4 dayold chicks and keeping the remaining 3 eggs warm.
Friday 1st May 2009
We have two chicks hatched.
Tuesday 28th April
A cold, misty start to the day at 3 degrees. Temperatures sank to below freezing overnight.
Monday 27th April
A wet day 9 degrees. Mother Great Tit comfortable out of the rain siting on her seven eggs.
Friday 24th April
The leaves on the Oak tree have suddenly come out this week. 08.15h 14.8 degrees C.
Thursday 23rd April
The mother bird is spending much more time, day and night, sitting on her 7 eggs.
Monday morning, 20th April
Another egg this morning. We now have seven.
Sunday 19th April - Another egg!
It was a cold night with no cloud cover and a low outside temperature of of 2.3 degrees C. The mother bird is spending more of her time sitting on the eggs. With a beautiful sunrise and dawn chorus, the day looks promising. 4 degrees C at 07:15h.
Can you spot that another egg has appeared this morning. We have six eggs which you can see when the bird flies out for food? She can be seen turning them from time to time.
Saturday 18th April
We have a great tit sitting on five eggs. Please add comments to our blog.
